Connecting with Others (5/18/20)

Today is Monday, May 18, 2020. On Friday and throughout the weekend, Ella and I diligently worked on a variety of aspects of our project. Throughout Friday, we really focused on corresponding with a variety of professionals, identifying potential interviews for the following week, and contacting numerous student leaders within the Hawken community. We were able to set up over a dozen meeting with people for the following week. I am really looking forward to learning more about different alumni, schools, and non-profits. I think that the meetings will be extremely important for our project, and it will influence the structure of the board we are developing. Not only did we reach out to a variety of adult professionals, but we also wanted to reach out to the Hawken student body and promote the Hawken Philanthropy Leadership Board. On Friday, we reached out to each of Hawken’s Class deans to obtain a list of students that are leaders and philanthropy oriented. Over the weekend, Ella and I contacted numerous students about the new leadership position. We sent each student the same general paragraph about the philanthropy board and recommending that they apply. As of today, 8 students have applied for the board and we are ecstatic. The deadline for the board is May 26, so there is still a lot of time for students to apply. Throughout our project, both Ella and I have been extremely mindful of how students are going to apply and to insure it is fair for everyone. Ella and I are not aiding any students in completing their application, we created an email for applications to go into directly, we do not review any submitted applications (since they are confidential), and we have a board of faculty and staff that will be selecting the students for the board. We wanted to insure that everyone has an equal chance of being a part of new leadership opportunity. After reaching out to student leaders, Ella and I then began prepping for each of our interviews and creating unique questions for each person.

  1. Zach, thank you for sharing the presentation that you gave Mr. Biggar! It seems like you and Ella are being thoughtful with your process of the creation of the Hawken Philanthopy Leadership Board, and have made important connections to learn what other people and organizations are doing. I am interested in learning more about who you are planning to interview, and the application process for the interested Hawken students. See you tomorrow at 10:00 am! - Mrs. Mullen
